If you're looking for a way to keep that resolution to get into shape, but that's actually fun, sign up for classes in American Tribal System Belly Dance.
This isn't 'cabaret' belly dance, with the skimpy costumes, lots of sequins, and vibrating hips. American Tribal Belly Dance combines dance traditions from around the world in a group improvisational setting. That's the cultural aspect. From the fitness side, the moves develop core strength, isolation, and flexibility.
Taught by Roma, certified ATS instructor and founder of Nomadic Magic Tribal Dance Troupe, the dancers learn basic steps that come from Egypt, Tunisian, Romany, Arabia, and other exotic locales. Using subtle cues and group participation, each dance is unique, because each is improvised. Dancers follow each other, adding new steps to their repertoire while building on their favorite moves and combinations.
I know this because I'm part of the troupe. I started the classes two years ago because I wanted to regain flexibility. Now classes and practice are a staple of my week. The troupe is a diverse group of women -- now good friends -- who never would have met if not for a common interest in coin belts and graceful movements. That's as much a part of the ethnic tradition as the dance steps themselves.
Our costumes are not particularly revealing. Think 'gypsy,' with layers of colorful blouses and skirts and scarves. For those of us who aren't eager to show much midriff, that's another attraction!
